You can't really calculate how much space you need until you know what you want to put on it.

You storing pictures, music, movies, programs, documents - which?

500Gb is a good all round size and are selling at a reasonable price at the moment.

In that case you may as well go for a 500GB like Flops suggested, you can get some good ones for between £50-60.

This one looks like a good buy

I got one of those then got paranoid about my back up so got another one to back up the back up,it's now in a fireproof box with other things, they are that cheap these days it's just not worth taking chances with your files whether they are photo's you can't replace or music it took you years to accumulate.

Aye, it does seem a little over the top.... until you lose something and it really causes you grief.

I remember storing a lot of WAV files, music I'd painstakingly ripped from vinyl and cassettes on an internal 250Gb Western Digital Hard Drive.

The drive was brand new, it died without warning at three weeks old.

Yes, it was replaced under warranty but those music files took me days, weeks, to convert. All that time wasted for trusting a mechanical device. Stupid, really.
