What with all I'm hearing of late about Maxtors and how they run hot
and burn up I'm thinking seriously about getting a cooling system for
mine.
I have the 80gig 7200 that I purchased last year about this time and
even though it's still running fine I do notice it does get quite hot.
What would be the best method for keeping it cool, a liquid system or
what?
Also in my case the HHD is mounted in the bottom of the tower in a
vertical position. Would horizontal be better?(I do notice that most
of the heat produced by the drive is coming off the top of the case.)
Also are their any alternatives in cooling systems that might do a
better job than the water systems?(Years back in one of my jobs as a
electronic service tech we used a peel and stick solid state cooling
pad on many boards that ran hot. wondering if these are available for
computers as such.)
Thanks for any advice.

IMHO not w/o additional fan blowing onto it ...

I once tested a 7200 RPM Maxtor 6800 27GB HD by measuring the
temperatures of the tiny chips that drive the motor and heads:

Ambient air temp.: 24C
Horizontal temp.: 68C (drive > 6" above table, supported only on
sides)
Vertical temp.: 53C (sitting on table)

Vertical also made the drive's aluminum casting about 2-3C cooler.

That's what one would expect with natural convection cooling a rectangular
block.
