What is the advantage of a shared folder in WLM?

Are these just hyperlinks to existing files? Or is it a duplicate
folder? So it uses more diskspace...

Greetings,

It copies over the files to the Sharing Folder and yes, uses more disk space.

I'm not to keen on this design myself.
