Advanced Find tab selections conflict

Has anyone noticed that in Outlook 2003 the advanced find selections can
conflict between tabs (ie, different search phrases specified on the Messages
tab and on the Advanced tab). Sometimes the selections are additive,
sometimes one overrides another, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or
reason to it.

Is there something that Microsoft has published that explains this Advanced
Find behavior?

Note: this is one of those "just curious" posts, so unless you too are
really bugged by this or know the answer, just laugh and move on...

Which fields are you noticing problems with? The entries on each tab should
'AND' together - ie, From microsoft AND unread unless they are the same
field, then they OR together.

Two areas where there can be problems: the From on the General tab is the
email address, on Advanced, it’s the display name. Two conditions for the
same field use the OR operator and its easy to create rules that cancel each
other out.

Thanks Diane for repsonding. The issue was mostly I didn't understand how the
selections in the various tabs were combined - the AND/OR you mentioned is
the explanation. However, the search I did doesn't give results one would
expect. Try this:

Enter search for word "xxx" in "subject and message body" on the Messages
tab , and enter Message field contains "yyy" on the Advanced tab, only
results with "xxx" AND "yyy" in message body are returned. One would expect
it to return results with "xxx" in subject OR ( "xxx" OR "yyy" in Message
body ).

Oh well, put this one on the list for help improvement. Thanks again!
