Westell Modem
Netgear wireless router
NIC card
Windows XP
Cables

After struggling for a long time we moved the above described package to
another computer, also running XP.
We connected immediately both through wired ports and a wireless connection.

We returned the entire package to the subject machine and XP tells us
"Limited or no connection"
All Modem and Router lights are normal
A dead end address that looks something like this appears: 169.xxx.xxx.xxx

We've tried different slots for the NIC in the subject computer.

We suspect something the registry but have no clue as to where to look.

Heellp!

Control Panel | Network Connections | (right click) Properties
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) | Properties

Check set to Obtain an IP address automatically.

If it was already, then try setting the last digit to one more than the
router.

That should read:

If it was already, then deselect the automatic option and try setting
the last digit to one more than the router.

That would be because you have things set up on one machine and not the
other. If you want the two networks to communicate with each other and also
get to Internet, you have to ensure they are on auto IP assign and bridge
the two. That way they will do both easily.
