If you deleted AcroPDF.dll as per the Adobe workaround for vulnerability in
Reader and Acrobat 7, there is now a new .dll to paste in Active X folder.

Actually, Adobe 8 has just been released. Go to
http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ for the download.

Smirnoff, Alan:

I have been holding off on upgrading Acrobat Reader. If you've had
experience with v.8, does it resolve the issues recently reported about
v.7? Many thanks.

We have switched from Acrobat to Foxit
(http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php ) . Foxit loads pdfs much
faster than Acrobat and it never locks up our computers as Acrobat used to
do. It is Free and works like a charm, Highly recommended! I have no
connection - just heard about it on another forum.

Foxit is great. It takes some getting used to as there is no text for the
buttons when you hover the pointer over them, but outside of that, I think
it beats Adobe hands down. Not to mention Foxit is less than 3MB and Adobe
Reader is over 20MB.

....and Foxit doesn't have to be installed. It's simply an executable.

Thanks to you all. Last time I tried FoxIt it didn't display some PDFs,
but I'll certainly try it again.

Ted:

I haven't had any issues displaying PDFs, but, you may open more than I do.

I have used foxit and I can confirm that it has many problems...
one of them that it cannot handle complex and very big pdfs very well.
I have 60.000 pdf files.. I should know.

Adobe acrobat reader 8 is 10 times faster than 7

its a big change.. in fact its like a whole new reader...

So once I tried it, I gave fox it its long deserved boot...

I have never heard anyone complain about Foxit before.

Perhaps it was just with very large files? Or perhaps it was an earlier
version?

The current v2.0 works very well for me and I often open pdfs of up to 100
pages.

All I know, is that many freeze-ups in windows could be traced to Acrobat.
It seems it does not close down properly after a pdf is closed - Accord32
was still running after the last pdf was closed and unless manually closed
(Ctrl-Alt-Del) , a second pdf could not be opened and the system froze.

On-line discussion of problem:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...0tkmsftngp07#p

Maybe this has been fixed in the more recent versions of Acrobat? Has the
excessive load time been adressed?

For me, Foxit has solved all pdf problems and I no longer balk at opening a
pdf.

Graham
