Any one know where you can get either a freeware equivalent to this or this
at a realistic price, not $400+

If you are trying to convert postscript to
PDF, ghostscript does this. Basicly it is free for
non-commercial use, read the copyright carefully,
as it is unusual.
Ghostscript is available for download at:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
My command for converting a file called out.ps to out.pdf is:
gswin32 -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=out.pdf -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -
dBATCH out.ps
Modify to taste.

In my opinion there is no PDF maker equivalent to Acrobat Pro, for fullness
of features. The one I like the best is PDFCreator,
http://sector7g.wurzel6.de/pdfcreator/index_en.htm
There are others, but I like this one the best.
Whether or not this fills your requirement depends on the feature set you
require.

You could buy the latest version of Serif's PagePlus 10.03
that only costs about $125 US. It has full desktop publishing
capabilities and is comparable to Quark or Indesign and you
can export Press Ready PDF files or .TIF proofs with this software.
I use it for a variety of things including a newspaper and Zine and
it is great. I can use it with commercial printers, or copy shops,
either way. The ship free of charge and you can get it in the
continental US within 7 days. Includes Users Instruction Manual.
View product details at: http://www.serif.com/pageplus/pageplus10/

You CANNOT open and edit existing PDF files with this product however.

OpenOffice.org prints to a nice basic PDF.

However, addon tool "extendedPDF" to OpenOffice and you've got
something pretty close to Acrobat Pro

<http://www.jdisoftware.co.uk/pages/epdf-home.php>

This works in OpenOffice up to vers. 1.1.4 - I haven't tried it in the
the ver. 2 beta.
