In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to
the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not
work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden
Administrator account. The default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen,
do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up
Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or
have Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the
built-in Administrator account's password to a blank.

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords
that you will remember and make other desired changes.

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which
cannot be deleted) and modify the desired account(s) and use Start > Run
> "control userpasswords2" to modify the desired account(s). By

design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home
is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice
at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

Failing that, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.

The big problem is when I go to Safe mode, it also ask me for the password
for the Administrator Account ...... (now much regrets)

Btw, from Malke's response, downloaded bd050303.zip and trying to understand
how to use it. Seems a bit lengthy and hopefully I can get it right, thanks

Please read the how-to on the NTpasswd page again. You need to download
EITHER the precompiled for Windows bootable floppy image and create the
bootable floppy in a working machine OR the .iso and then create the
boot cd by burning the .iso (image) to cd-r with third-party burning
software.

Then you simply need to boot with whatever media you created (after
setting the target machine to boot from that drive if necessary).
NTpasswd will start and you follow the directions in the program.

I did up to step 4 ( password reset) and give me the following

RID: 01f4, Username: <Administrator>*disabled or locked*
RID: 0efb, Username: <familyt>, *disabled or locked*
..... the others are similar to the link.

what shall I do next? Do I type in "Administrator" and hit enter? And when
prompted for new password, type * ?

Aprreciate your help, Thanks

Choose the Administrator and IIRC it will give you the opportunity to
enable it and then change the password.
