Administrator/owner password recovery - Win XP Home

My girlfriend (in college) has an HP machine running Win XP Home Ed.
She is expecting company and wanted to set up a "family or guest"
account, as she has done in the past. However this time she got a
message saying, "computer is locked and only an administrator/owner
can unlock it". She input her p/w and it doesn't work.

A chat with HP resulted in being told that she might have a virus or
spyware which may have done this. Very unhelpful. She has "Norton
A/V", up to date, 'Search & Destroy", ditto, and she runs "Stinger"
periodically. If there was something, it's likely gone now.

Can anyone recommend a program to recover her Admin p/w, which has
been changed? Or to revert the p/w to something which will allow her
to access the system?

Please also bear in mind that she is in no way computer savvy, and I
am too far away to do the hands on thing. Any suggestions would be
much appreciated.

TIA, Regis

From http://kiddanger.com/?id=w2kpassword

Blanking the local Administrator's password
Go to this site http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and get
either the floppy bootdisk version or the CD .iso version.
This is the boot disk image:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bd041205.zip
And, this is the CD .iso image:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/cd041205.zip

Works for me, XP and W2k

Regards,

Thanks very much for the ideas. I'm going to try a few on my spare
computer before passing one on the the g/f. Alt.comp.freeware never
fails to deliver. Thanks again.
