I am running a single PC, wireless networked to a laptop, which is
infrequently switched on. Operating software is XP Pro

I am the only user and there is a single account - myself as Administrator.

When trying to make changes to the setup the following message comes up when
exiting msconfig.

'An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified
changes'

I am already the Administrator. How can I make changes to set up? Changes
that I find are necessary to run Norton 360 satisfactorily.

Best to contact Symantec for support with their software. Basically, a
simple question applies to all "Norton" issues - If you've paid for a
product, then nothing should be required beyond installation and a
on-line update. Anything else ( Time/Expense ) to get it to work is
a good indication the product is lacking.

The name 360 is appropriate since it likely keeps purchasers/users
running in circles to get it up and running or keep it working.

For comparison, I use NOD32 and after installation it takes care of
itself. I've never once had to take an action to resolve an issue or get
it to work.

If by that you mean the built-in Administrator account, the be warned!
Please be aware that it is VERY BAD PRACTICE to use the built-in
Administrator account on a day-to-day basis and as your only account on the
computer. If the account gets corrupted, as it may well do, then your ONLY
way into the machine is by doing a repair install of XP. set up a User
account and give that Admin rights for daily use, leaving the built-in
Administrator account for emergency access only.

Even an administrator shouldn't, and in some cases cant', make changes
to Services via msconfig. If you need to stop or prevent services from
running at startup, you should use the services screen:
start -> run -> services.msc
