Administrator and Microsoft Recovery Console

I am trying to follow a Computer Cops post about how to remove the
about:blank hijacker. One of the steps is to run MRC to edit a hidden .dll in
the registry.

I loaded and booted in MRC mode and it said I had to be an administrator.
This is just a home PC running XP Pro. So, I went to Control Panel User
Accounts and I created a password as administrator and now when I boot to
Windows I have to log on and type my password, which I don't wat to have to
do, and when I select Micrsoft Recovery Console at the dos screen when I
reboot and type in the password I created it says invalid password.

Now it appears to me that I have changed how my computer starts irrevokably,
however, that doesn't make sense since it's my computor.

So, two questions: Why can't I start the MRC, or more to the point; how can
I? And, how can I then return to the simple original start-up, i.e., push the
button and up comes my desktop?

Thank you for reading this.

To change back to auto-logon;
Start\Run\control userpasswords2\Users tab\remove check from
"Users must write their name and password to use the computer"

To delete the About:Blank hijacker you need to install
Ad-aware6 and Spybot also install CWShredder and
HijackThis... if by chance one does not delete it, one of
the others will... Spybot will most likely get it.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/downloads.htm

When Spybot ends the scan, right click on the hijacker and
select more details\jump to location\ this action takes you
to the registry key in case you prefer manual edition but the
program will do this for you. Check it this way; when Spybot
jumps to the registry key, add it to the favorites menu and exit
the registry.. next clean the hijacker with spybot and close the
program, next go back to the registry and see what spybot
changed in the registry.

Install AdAware6 (Free)

Istall Spybot Search and Destroy (Free)

Install CWShredder (Free)

Install Hijack This (Free)

Read the Tutorial pages before deleting what HijackThis
finds on your system to be sure you don't delete normal stuff..
(only if the previous programs don't clean your computer).

Dear Juan

Thank you very much for responding, pero no serbio. When I uncheck the
password box I lose all my stuff: internet connections, icons, documents,
casi todo.

Turns out, it looks like I didn't need a password to use the Microsoft
Recovery Console, (What's the difference between that and DOS?), I just
needed to hit enter and procede with the Computer Cops directions,
(http://computercops.biz/modules.php?...ticle&sid=5199), which
it turns out is problematical because the .dll file they directed me to that
needs dealing with in the registry, (msvsres.dll is the value I have in the
location they describe), does not show up in the System32 directory in MRC.
I guess I should post to them about that.

I have all the mal-ware programs you mentioned plus Panda ActiveScan and
Trend Micro and keep them updated. This fix is for a strain, I understand,
that is more intractable.

Any more ideas on how to change back to no password startup or any of the
rest of this?

Thank you again.
