Assuming your system setup(by you or an administrator) is not preventing installation through executable file the only other requirements/pre-requisites can be found in the kb article.

Did you TRY?

Yes. It went through but I was not sure if this was still writing to
registry, etc.

If an update fails, you will be told so by the installation program.
