Larry,
Your friends were referring to the Messenger Service that has to be
running on the system that you're sending the message to.
If you've become a victim in the past of the unwanted Messenger
Service popups, and you disabled Messenger Service to stop them, then
this is the result. The best solution for that is to install a NAT
router, which will intercept the popups, and enable Messenger Service
on all systems.
