Adjusting audio volume within a clip

Is it possible to have varying volume levels on the
original audio track within one clip, or can you only
set one level for the duration of the clip?
I have a quite long clip that includes at various points
a speech made from some way away, applause, and audience
hubbub. I need to crank up the vol during the speech, but
then the other parts bust your eardrums. If I adjust the
vol to make those bits bearable, then you can't hear the
speechmaker.
Only solution I could see was to chop the clip at the
appropriate points of change, then adjust the volume
within each of the new segments. But then I lost some
continuity...
Any bright ideas out there?
Thanks
CW
