Address resolving problem

Hi,
On a friends system:

WINXP Home
IE6

There seems to be a problem resolving addresses. By this i mean that
whenever an address (not just the one listed below) is typed into the
address bar, such as www.virgin.com (not a porn site :-)), in the status bar
I can see that it is searching for variations on this address. For example:

www.www.virgin.com.edu
www.www.virgin.com.org
www.www.virgin.com.com

Eventually it will give up and give a page not found error.
I have set the property in the Options to 'Not search from the address bar',
but this just had the effect of not displaying any pages whatsoever. In fact
I have tried all the options under the 'Search' heading but none worked.

Any ideas on this would be gratefully appreciated.

Best Regards
Darren

From a previous post.

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?

Includes: Repair the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes
See section: Various Registry Fixes = "RepairDefaultPrefix.reg"
[or - manually]
Open Regedit to the following locations and verify the below default
entries:
Start | Run (type) "regedit" (no quotes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""
