Just transferred from Eudora 5.2 to Outlook 2003, so I have a string of
questions on how the address book works in Outlook.

Q2
When I try to open the Address Book in Outlook I can't, and get error
messages like: "the address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder
associated with this address list could not be openned. It may have been
moved of deleted, or you do not have permissions. For informationon how to
remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Office
Outlook Help"

....That appears when I try to open it from the drop down "Tools" menu, I
then hit OK and the window for it opens but has no entries in it.

I have been able to import my address into the Contacts list - they do
appear there but I seem to have scrambled the fields somehow - I'll post a
further question on that next...

Thanks in advance

Tools | Email Accounts -- make sure the Outlook Address Book is installed as an address list. If it isn't, add it. If it is, remove it, restart Outlook, then add it back.

You have not added the Outlook Address Book service to your mail profile
correctly, it appears. In Outlook, click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or
change existing directories or address books>Next. Select Outlook Address
Book and click Change. Remove the incorrect Contacts reference there. In
fact, remove all Contacts folder references. OK out of all that back to
your main Outlook window and right-click the Contacts folder. Choose
Properties, select the Outlook Address Book tab, and check the box labeled
"Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book". Click OK.

OK I think this is where the problem is - there are two lists called
"Contacts" that appear under Outlook Address Book in the drop down list, but
the fist seems to be faulty - like a phantom. Only one "Contacts" folder
appears when viewing "contacts" so I don't know where the "phantom" one is
coming from.

Did you try what I suggested -- removing the Outlook Address Book and adding it back?

Then do what I said, delete them both, then reenable the Contacts folder you
want.
