Address Book will not come up using Fax Wizard

My OS is Windows XP. Before I installed Microsoft Office XP-2002, whenever I
would send a fax from my old word processor -- AmiPro -- or Notepad, the Fax
Wizard would come up and I could click on Address Book and select the
recipient. Now I get all sorts of error messages that I cannot use the Address
Book (and no entries are showing), whether I use Word, AmiPro or Notepad. But
the Address Book is still on my hard drive -- I can access it through Start -
All Programs - Accessories - Address Book -- though I get a new prompt, asking
me if I want to make it my default V-card viewer.

Whenever you install Outlook, Windows XP Fax switches from using the Windows
Address Book to the Outlook Address Book.
So should you, it appears.
What happens if you reset your OS to use the Windows Address Book?

Yes, I want to do the normal procedure. But when I was going through the Send
Fax Wizard and clicked on Address Book, I get a window saying "The address book
cannot be displayed ... , etc." Then I click OK, and the Address Book window
opens anyway. At the top it says "Show Names from the" and I can choose Outlook
Address Book or Contacts. If I choose Contacts and click on New, I get the
error message as above: "The address book cannot be displayed ... etc." If I
choose Outlook Address Book and click on New, the New Entry window opens. No
matter what choices I make there, I get the error message: "A new entry could
not be added. Please use the contacts module to create this entry."

>What happens if you reset your OS to use the Windows Address Book?

How is that done?

Thank you for your answers, and let me know if you want me to Post to Newsgroup
AND send via e-mail to you as we are going through this problem. Thanks much
for your help.

The messages you are getting simply indicate that you have not yet
configured your Outlook Address Book, so Windows XP Fax can't find any
records. Since I suspect you have not made any entries into your Outlook
Contacts, we can address that later.

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs... Change your Contact
list manager to the Windows Address Book instead of Outlook and see if you
get your fax Contacts back in the Fax Wizard.

Please tell me how that is done -- could not find it in Outlook

Did this as you described, but I still get the same error messages, even after
rebooting. Choices were Address Book and Outlook.

If you open the Windows Address Book, are your fax Contacts there?

Follow the instruction is the KB to configure the Outlook Address Book:

This is from my first posting, which you may want to review to make sure you
have all the information up until now:

I can access it through Start - All Programs - Accessories - Address Book --
though I get a new prompt, asking me if I want to make it my default V-card
viewer.

OK, I did that, though I don't know what the next step is to copy my fax
contacts into it and have it start working properly. Strange that this is not
apparent. Hopefully it will all become clear to me as to how this all works and
what I missed along the way once we're done. I use AOL for my e-mailing, and
they have their own address book. I use Internet Explorer for a browser when
AOL's is not working right for a particular website. But I have never used
Outlook Express or Outlook for e-mailing. And I thought the fax contact list
(address book) that I can select in the fax wizard, when I would select Fax as
the printer, was independent of e-mailing software.

Thanks for your help. I check for your posts every hour or so.

As I said, Windows XP Fax uses the WAB until and unless you install Outlook.
I know you can access the WAB. My question was does the Windows Address Book
still contain your Fax Contacts?
If so simply import it into your Outlook Contacts Folder.

Yes, under Shared Contacts

>If so simply import it into your Outlook Contacts Folder.
>File > Import and Export > Internet Mail and Addresses > Outlook Express...

One of the steps in Importing asks where from. But Windows Address Book is not
one of the choices. Your sequence above says I should choose Outlook Express as
the from choice. That doesn't make sense to me, but I went ahead and did it.

After that I tried sending a fax from notepad. I get the same error message as
before:

"The address list cannot be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this
address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do
not gave permisssions. For information on how to remove this folder from the
Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help."

After clicking OK, the Address Book Window comes up anyway. If I click New to
put a new entry in Contacts, I get error messages. But if I click on a new
sub-heading I created from one of your earlier instructions, called Fax
Contacts Set Up 6-19-04, the window opens up to enter the contact information.
So it appears I did something earlier today to set up this new folder that does
work. It appears you're trying to help me get the original Contacts folder to
work, like I guess it's supposed to.

Bear with me Russ. I know this is difficult to do through these Newsgroup
messages, and you are being very generous with your time. I really don't see
how anyone would know what to do on their own from Outlook's Help menus. The
only reason I even went to Outlook when the problem started is because the
error message mentions it. Seems to me if this is what happens when someone
installs Outlook, there should be something in the install routine that makes
the conversion.

Outlook Express is the operating system's overlay to the Windows Address
Book. Hence, it provides the only portal through which you can import the
data contained in the WAB. Outlook cannot import directly from a WAB file.
It must import through Outlook Express. That is why I told you to import
your WAB through Outlook Express. You will find no option to import from a
WAB.

Your error messages mean that you still have not configured the Outlook
Address Book correctly. I cannot tell what you did wrong. I posted the
instructions. Reread them.

At this point I want you to look in the Outlook Contacts Folder. Were your
fax Contacts imported and do they appear correctly? If so, we can move to
the next step.

And no, none of this is documented in any Help files. There is no one still
alive who could write them. The integration between Outlook and Fax has been
ignored for so long, there are only 2 or 3 dinosaurs left on the planet who
know how it really works. For the most part, it doesn't.
