Which mail account type are you using?
Assuming a POP3 account, scan it for errors with scanpst.exe.

See if you can access your Contacts folder without any errors now. If not,
try it again after starting Outlook with the resetfolders switch;
Start-> type; outlook.exe /resetfolders
(note the space in the command)
Once you can access your Contacts folder without any issues, you can assign
set it as an Address List in your Address Book as per;
