in the top of web browsers in the Address bar where we type www.whatever.com
there is a little icon image to the left of the words. how do i change that
to be whatever i want. or is it something that the web server chooses.
homedepot.com has one. and there are many other professional sites that have
their own. i find that using IE i can only see their pic if i favorite the
site first where as FF automatically displays the pic. is it possible for me
to put my own pic up there.

It's called a Favicon. See:
http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/
or www.favicon.com

Yes, I have wondered about this

I have set up a favicon and Firefox shows it, but IE6 does not

Is this just the way it is and we have no choice ?

For IE to show it you need to delete any prior favorites to the site, close IE and reopen it, then create a new favorite to the site

Stefan,
Thank you for that info.

Of course, I am talking about my own site and I have no problem doing that.
But does that mean that others visiting my site only see the favicon if they
save my web address as a favorite ?

I suppose the term "favicon" could imply this, but it is interesting that
when I just browse the Internet, I often see different icons (i.e. not the
IE icon) for sites I have never visited.

You & they will see it too if you have never been there before the favicon was added as a favorite
