Requesting an additional sort option in Outlook (I am using 2007). I would
like to be able to sort by domain name, that is after the "@". Sometimes it
is easier to find email from a company by its name rather than the individual
or department. I know I received email from the xyz company but I am forced
to search (often slow and cumbersome) rather than sorting by domain. Also,
sometimes I receive email from multiple accounts at the xyz company and
grouping them that way makes (or I should say WOULD make) life easier. Then
it would not matter if it came from "support@" or "customercare@" since all
would be in the same group.

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to employ Search folders.

Search folders are not sufficient. If I have a big unruly inbox, I like
sorting in ways that makes big chunks easy to organize. Sort by sender, by
subject, etc. I also have about 15 different corporate clients that I get
email from (multiple people at those clients) all the time. So I can search
by domain 15 times every time, or sort by top level domain of the sender. I
know which I would prefer.

Search folders have to be set up in advance. Sorting by domain would let
you easily group a folder into the perhaps hundreds of sender domains where
the mail came from.

I actually tried to do this by creating a user-defined field for the domain.
Unfortunately, the domain info I need is in the sender field and Outlook
only lets me see the "friendly" name from that field, not the address itself.
Making the domain info available to the folder list view would save ME a ton
of time when cleaning and filing my inbox.

Now I'm on to the next roadblock... :-)

I added the config file from slipstick to create a "Sender Email Address"
field. I then added a user-defined field -- "Sender Domain" -- which is
parsed from the address so that it contains just the domain. I've added this
field to my table view for a folder.

Unfortunately, I then discovered that Outlook won't let me sort or group by
this field! Ack! So close.

The goal here was to be able to quickly group (or sort) my massive inbox
into sender domains so that I could file or delete messages in batches. I've
seen other recommendations to use search folders but that requires setup
beforehand and, in my case, there may be hundreds of domains involved and
they will change over time.

Thus, grouping or sorting by domain would really help.

Do you (or anyone else out there) know how I can either:

1) Get Outlook to let me sort/group on a user defined field.

-OR-

2) Create the Sender Domain field some other way that IS sortable.

The only other way I can think of is to use instant search in this format:
from:microsoft.com - its not quite what you are looking for, but is faster
than editing search folders.

There are 3rd party tools, like Nelson Email Organizer that can file mail by
domains. others are listed at http://www.slipstick.com/addins/search.asp
