other office apps -- is there a way to install/down load a full range of
colors??

At least through Excel 2003, Excel is limited to a palette of 56 colors. You have
considerable control over which colors make up the 56. On the Tools menu, select
Options, then click on the Color tab. Here you can modify any of the colors (hint:
at least keep black and white). Once you have a custom palette you like, you can
copy its palette to another workbook from the same dialog.

Jon's method is manual and works just fine. At the following website
is a piece of code that assigns the rgb values that you want to create
the pallette by code.

Note the values I use in this code are variations of black and you'd
want to substitute your own values.
