Is there any way to prevent Outlook from adding "RE:" to the subject line in
reply messages? In an ongoing conversation on certain mail lists (which are
already set to flag the subject line), we wind up with a long chain of "RE:s"
before the actual topic. Recent example:

"Subject: [Hall] Re: [Hall] Re: [Hall] Re: [Hall] Re: [Hall] RE: [Hall] Re:
[Hall] Talking portrait idea"

You can see how this gets annoying.

What version of Outlook are you running? It shouldn't add Re: with each
reply if its already there at the beginning of the subject.

What does [Hall] represent in the above example?

I'm using Outlook 2003.

The "[Hall]" is an identifier added by the list manager, in this case a
HALL-oween enthusiasts' mailing list. It automatically gets added in front of
each subject that doesn't already have it... exactly the same way Outlook
adds the "Re:." The two programs seem to be wrestling for control of the
subject line, but I would rather cede the position, if Outlook will let me!

That's a very bad behaving mailing list.

Unfortunately, no, there isn't anything on the Outlook side to prevent that,
at least built in. One could theoretically write code that would strip it
off, but there's nothing in product.
