Outlook doesn't support NNTP (network news transfer protocol).

Outlook Express does support NNTP.

Use Outlook Express for newsgroups. That's all the button in Outlook did
anyway; i.e., Outlook loaded Outlook Express. Why load the wrong program to
then have it load the correct program to do newsgroups? Just load the
correct program in the first place.

Did you EVER have the button in the first place? *You* have to put it
there. See
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...970221033.aspx. "The
newsreader" mentioned in the last paragraph *is* Outlook Express!

You can try NewsHound http://www.shorelinesoftware.com/ an add-on which
lets you use Outlook to view/post to Newsgroups. I have been using it
for over a year now and have had no problems with it.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

You may need to reset the menu or toolbar using Tools, customize.

$30 for an NNTP add-in when there are so many free, good NNTP clients?

And you are still running another process to handle the NNTP protocol that
Outlook does not support. I suppose if you want your folder tree in Outlook
polluted with newsgroups then the plug-in has value. So your choice will be
to scroll through a long tree to switch between your e-mails and newsgroups
or to flip between the Outlook and OE windows.

Some other solutions, like Newshound, are mentioned at
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/news.htm. One failing they neglect to
mention is that Outlook does NOT support the References header and why
threading or grouping of e-mails is by the Subject header (because the
Reference header will be missing for those that used Outlook). That's why,
when I subscribe to discussion groups that use e-mail instead of forum
software or an NNTP group, I use Outlook Express for reading those e-mails
so I can thread them as discussions (of course, those still using Outlook
for their posts submitted to the discussion can screw up the thread). That
means the NNTP plug-in for Outlook had better manage the References header
itself so you can properly thread the posts in newsgroups.

You are not "running another process to handle the NNTP protocol that
Outlook does not support".

Outlook does not "support" any particular protocol. Outlook is a shell
which uses transport providers to support protocols. Several transport
providers are included with Outlook, and it may appear to a casual user
that these are somehow an inherent part of Outlook, but they are not.

These transport providers do not run in their own process. Outlook
spawns threads to run them, as it does for many other things, such as
archiving.

Regarding your comment about "polluting" your folder tree with
newsgroups, I've always been amazed at the venom spewed by a few people
in this newsgroup towards using Outlook for newsgroup access.

Perhaps because it simply isn't true. Outlook has nothing to do with
the "references" header, or any other header. Again, Outlook is simply
a shell. The transport provider handling the message, whether it's the
Microsoft-supplied POP3 transport or a third party NNTP transport or
whatever, is completely responsible for parsing and storing the message
header and content in whatever manner it chooses. Outlook has no
involvement in that whatsoever.

For the record, NewsHound does use the references header to properly
thread newsgroup discussions.

Do you have a problem with someone getting paid for their work?

Using the same logic, why should anyone pay for Outlook when there are
plenty of free, good email clients and PIMs available for free?

Indeed, why should anyone pay for Windows when you can download Linux
for free?

Maybe Antony thought that NewsHound was worth the $30. Why does that
concern you?

Certainly not. No where in anything I've said does it imply or infer that I
have such a problem.

I completely agree. If there is another tool that provides the same
functionality and integration with Word as Outlook and that tool is free,
then I think it would be a Good Thing®.

If Linux can perform the same functions for someone that they need as
Windows does, incluing running the apps they need, then I completely agree.
