Hello,

I have an older Athlon 2500+ computer that is showing 512K of RAM.
There appears to be two large sticks of Corsair DDR ram but
MyComputer/Properties is only showing 512K.

Is there a way to tell what kind of RAM and how much I actually have
without pulling the sticks out? If I do have to pull them out to read
the label, is there anything I should be careful of?

I would like to add more ram but I don't know what type to buy, etc.
Does anyone have a suggestion about how I might work this out?

Then go here...
www.crucial.com

Input the make and model of your machine, and you`ll
find out the type, and amount of memory your machine will take.

I ran the test but could not get the specific recommendation because
this is a homebuilt. The results of the test are below. Is this enough
to tell you what I should buy?

Make, and model of Motherboard is important.
SIW will tell you that.
Sounds as tho` you could use 2 x 512megs of RAM with no
problem. (possibly 3 x 512).
1gig of RAM should help to make the machine go quite well.

I recall from buying DDR there being specific RAM recommendions to
chipset or mb implementations -- iow, if you have motherboard chipsets
XYZ, then buy this brand of RAM; whereas w/MB ZYX, then another
brandmake DDR was offered. A plurality thing, oddly. I'd probably
have been tending towards lowend if not buying outright generic DDR.
Not sure what exactly memory issues between them were - and personally
had mixed feelings about the 2500 chip. OK o/clocking up to around
the 1.8Ghz XP, but was much happier skipping over the of the last of
the so-called great XPs, culminating with the 2500, for a 3Ghz 756
A64. They served their purpose well, XPs (excluding for me up until
the 2500), for quite some time.

With less DDR on inventory shelves, may want to approach it locally -
for a return policy. Or find an #800 to talk to someone on a web
store that knows about what I've explained - give him your MB model/
make and chipset implementation for a recommending viable RAM.

Touch your hands to metal such as the case before you touch anything
inside the computer so you won't cause static electricity damage. When
you put them back make sure they are seated all the way in the slot and
be careful to put the longer tongue part in the longer groove and the
shorter one in the shorter groove so you don't damage the RAM. I once
blew a motherboard by not seating the RAM firmly in the slots. Also make
sure you hook them with the white clips that keep them seated firmly.
There is a little semi-circle on the ram that these clips fit into and
they will then snap the RAM in place. You have to see what kind of RAM
your motherboard is rated for before you buy any new RAM. That should be
in the manual and if you don't have the manual you can find it on the
website of the board maker.
