I add icons to the blue bar at the bottom of the screen on the left hand side
(next to 'START') and this problematic OS(XP) allows the display of only
three icons , any more are represented by two uninviting arrows. Is there a
way to increase the number of icons i can actually see from three?

This is called the Quick Launch toolbar. To expand it, right click in
an empty spot in the Taskbar and then click to remove the check mark
next to "Lock the taskbar." You should then see a vertical bar at the
right end of the Quick Launch toolbar. Left click and drag this bar to
the right to expand the Quick Launch toolbar. Then re-lock the taskbar.
