I recently added a new yamaha midi device, and it doesn't
show up on the list to change to. It does in 98, but not
in XP. This one is far better than the default SB Live
one, and works just fine in 98SE, which is on the same
computer. I have tried installing it on several other
computers with XP and the same thing happens. It doesn't
show up as a selectable device.

Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard for Windows XP? If not
download the latest from www.creative.com.
