I have a 256 MB module in my computer. I want to build up to 1 GB, but money
is tight. So, is it possible to add a 512 MB module, while I have the 256 MB
module installed.

This depends on the capabilities of the motherboard. If the board supports
this, the answer is yes. You'll need to check the specs or manual for the
board itself. If you're not sure what it is, Aida32.exe will produce a
report that should identify it. You can find this by lookign on Google.
