Adding Mass Storage via USB

Just purchased an external 120GB HDD which I've put into a separate box,
which has a USB 2 interface

Does anyone have step by step instructions on how to get this to work on my
PC

I am using the Disk Management option, in the Computer Management Snap in,
which sees the attached disk, and recognises the size OK, but I can't work
out how to partition and format it, as all of the options to do this are
either greyed out, or not available as a tab.

Any ideas. I really feel I am missing something obvious here.
