Adding a Layout

I'm having trouble understanding layouts. I have a custom layout I want to
add so that it appears with the built in layouts in the task pane. There was
a reply on this list indicating this was not possible. What this means I
guess is that if one decides to change elements on the layout one needs to go
through the entire deck and make such changes on a slide by slide basis. Is
this correct? If so, what is the relationship between slide masters and
layouts. What is value of creating a new slide master?

I'm using 2003 sp2 and considering upgrading to 2007. I use a third party
tool within PPT and need to find out if it is compatible.

Okay, thanks. PPT 2007 handles this differently than 2003.

In 2003, it is not possible to add layouts that show up on the slide layout
task pane.

But it is possible to create multiple masters.

When you create additional masters, they show up when you go to the Slide
Design task pane.

You would apply a different master to a slide using Format | Slide Design,
and then right-click (or click the arrow that shows up on the design
thumbnail) and choose "apply to selected slides."

Now that the slide is taking on the characteristics of the new master, you
should apply one of the slide layouts that are on the Slide Layout task
pane.

Now, the layouts will take on the characteristics of the title placeholder
and the bulleted text placeholder from the master you specified. For
example, the slide layout that has the 2 bulleted text columns ("title and
2-column text") will place those two text placeholders in the area you used
for the one bulleted text placeholder on the slide master. So if you make a
short bulleted text placeholder, the 2 text placeholders on that slide
layout will be short, too. Likewise, if you apply a "Title and Chart"
layout, the chart area will be the same as the area specified by the
bulleted text placeholder on the slide master.

Try setting up the bulleted text placeholder on the 2nd master to some
extremely vertical or extremely horizontal settings to see how it affects
the various layouts. If you change the Slide Design back to the original
master and then reapply the slide layout (might or might not be necessary),
you can see it change to pick up the characteristics of the other master.

In PPT 2007, you can add your own slide layouts and create your own
placeholders. These are new features that are not backward compatible with
PPT 2003.

Thanks. I will upgrade to 2007 if and when the plug-in I use becomes
compatible with it.
