i can change the color of the object in my template. I am
using the one called capsule but i want to make the color
a gradient. But i do not have the choice for more effects
with color. Am i missing something?

If you right click on the template background (Capsule),
choose Background from the menu, then when the dialog box
displays click the drop down and choose fill effects you
should be able to choose a gradient etc.

Are you working on the Slide Master? I can turn the color into a
gradient in Capsules.pot.
