Hi,

I've been adding drivers to Windows XP on RIS for a few years now. We're now
just moving across to Windows Deployment Services, and I've been able to
capture and deploy base XP images using sysprep. I now want to add drivers
for a load of new laptops that we've just got in. I've been able to mount
the image using imagex /mountrw, and could add the drivers to c:\drivers\nic
or \video or \sound etc. However, I've read that you can open the image in
System Image Manger, and add the drives through there, which is a better way
of doing it. However, when I try and open my winxp.wim file, I get an error
message saying:

The catalogue files for Windows image Windows XP can not be opened for the
following reason: Can not find the catalogue file associated with the
Windows image Windows XP.

The asks if I want to create them. If I select yes, I then get an error
saying:

"There was an error generating a catalogue file for image Windows XP. in
Windows image file winxp.wim."

The same error appears if I try and open a Vista Business 32bit or 64bit
image. If I look at the log file I see the following:

SP2 (x64) in Windows image file
D:\RIS\Images\Laptops&Desktops\win_xp_sp2_image.wim.

15:24 : System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The request is not supported

Ultimate (x86) in Windows image file
D:\RIS\Images\Laptops&Desktops\install.wim.

I'm running Windows 2003 Server R2, System Image Manager v6.0.6000.16386.
The Vista install images are 6.0.6000 and the Windows XP image is Windows XP
SP2 64bit.

Any help, or suggestions, much appreciated

You cannot use the System Image manager for Windows XP.

I had the same problem. I believe if the image has already been
uploaded into the WDS/RIS server, then the image is made part of its
storage system. I am fairly certain you have to export the image out
of WDS (or take it off the system where it saved it) and then open it,
then replace the image in WDS.

I am testing this right now, but that's my theory.

I've used imagex /mountrw, which mounts the image into a folder, so you can
add files to specific directories. However, I believe with Vista images, you
can use System Image Manager to add paths to driver files (possibly on
network drives?), which is a better way of doing it. I guess as Alex says,
you can't use SIM with WinXP.
