I have ordered a second hard drive for my computer and my question is, will i
have to install windows on the new hard drive and also when i save anything
in the future will windows prompt me to which hard drive to save it on or
will it just automaticly assign it. Thanks in advance

If the new drive has better performance than old,then install as slave on same
IDE cable,adjust current to master on jumper pin(s),once in xp,go to
run,type:
diskmgmt.msc In msc R.click on new drive select format,once thru exit,
then go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS
window
once its thru,then xp is now on new drive,power off switch jumper pins,start
computer.Once in xp reopen diskmgmt,format old C: drive,use as storage,also
D: being new asigned drive,if given diffrent letter,use that instead.

If you'll only be using the drive to store data, you won't need to install Windows.

You'll be prompted. It's no different from having just one hard drive: The first time you save something, the software needs to know where to save it.

Every retail hard disk comes with detailed installation instructions, including all the software you'll need. Your computer's user manual will describe how to work safely inside the computer. It's not hard to add a second hard disk, but it will seem daunting if this is your first time doing it. Just remember to take it slow. You can do this.

After this copy the letter of the old drive is used in many registry keys of
the new drive : it is not possible to boot on the new drive without the old
drive.
To use this copy you must boot on the new drive (in safe mode) to swap the
letters of the old drive and of the new drive in the registry of the new
drive. For that use the Knowledge Base article Q223188
(http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q223188 ) : regedit
, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, right click on a volume , chose
rename for instance C to Z, D to C, Z to D, reboot.

My current OS is ME. I will installing a second hard drive onto which I
plan to install XP Pro (so that I can install Office 2003 which needs XP to
run). My old hard drive, etc. has been working fine so I want to keep
everything as is on that old hard drive. I've REPLACED hard drives before,
but I've never ADDED one. With two hard drives and two OS, should I expect
some glitches or is this a normal thing to do and everything should be

You can have a dual boot using ME and XP and two hard
drives, but the applications will have to be installed for
each operating system.

If you upgrade to XP Pro, all your registry entries for the
ME applications will be retained and the programs will work
using XP as the OS. You can buy a retail upgrade CD for
less than a full install and that can be used in either
case. You can do this on one hard drive with enough free
space by creating a partition using Partition Magic, but it
is easier and perhaps better to use two hard drives.

When you begin the install of XP, the ME installation on C:
will be detected and you will select a different
drive/partition on which to install XP. There will be a
boot loader installed on C: and when you boot you'll get a
menu asking which OS to use.
