Adding 2nd hard drive and changing drive letter names

My apologies, this is more of a hardware question I think...

I had 2 crashes attempting to install SP2. I'm to the point now where I
have to reformat the C drive. Right now I'm booting up a parallel install
of WinXP on the existing hard drive.

But I had been considering adding a 2nd hard drive anyway.

Here's what I want to do:
1. Put in new hard drive
2. Name it C
3. Install WinXP Pro and SP2 on it. Put my programs on it.
4. Reformat old hard drive
5. Rename it X and use it for backups.

Can anyone either recommend a website that would walk me through this
process, or give me steps to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Remove old hard drive, connect and set the jumpers for a primary master hard
drive. This will be dependent on the manufacturers settings for the drive
you purchase. Remove any peripheral hard drives, Zip or USB devices.
Follow the steps in the supplied link below. After you install XP to the new
hard drive and apply the necessary Service Packs , updates, etc., you can
now connect the old hard drive. After booting into Window, you can format
and partition the old hard drive from Start> My Computer> right click My
Computer and then from the menu select "Manage" to open Computer Management>
then select Disk Management. Your can bring up help dialogs by right
clicking the drive you want to format.
After configuring the old drive, you can now connect to the internet and
install you hard ware devices and applications.

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

This is all very helpful! Thanks!
I am wondering, however...can just leave that stuff on the old hard drive
for a while before reformatting? Just to be sure I haven't forgotten
anything before reformatting it?

what about the hard disk names? At what point can I name the new hard disk C
and rename the old hard disk without losing functionality on all the stuff
on that disk?

that may have been a dumb question...sorry

When you add the old drive it will take on the next available drive letter.

Don't forget to start by backing up your data. I would read Gary
Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm to help in bringing settings forward

Have your existing drive disconnected initially, connect the new in its
place as primary master.

Boot, and at power on, enter BIOS setup by hitting the appropriate hot
key (often DEL) - make sure the new drive is detected and set the Boot
order to CD before Hard disk. May be a separate Boot page or may be an
entry in BIOS Settings

Boot the XP CD and proceed to set up (at the reboot either sit tight
when asked to hit a key to boot the CD, or go back to bios setup and
change to HD first).

Once done, run the SP2 install from its CD before going on the net.
Then install software, and reconnect the old drive, setting its jumper
to slave (or better putting it as the master on the second IDE channel).
Once booted up (from your new drive) go to Control Panel - Admin Tools -
Computer Management, select Disk Management and look lower right for the
graphic of the old drive. R-click the partition and Format.

Note that drive letters are not absolute things, but assigned by the
system as it boots up. The new installation will be C and this
partition on the old drive will be assigned some other letter, which you
can change, same place, by r-click and Change Drive letter

I would put off activation for a time until all is settled, then (but
well within the 30 days) get on the net and at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
Activate on the Internet
