added buttons disappear in newly opened files

In the past, I have added and changed menu buttons in
PowerPoint 2002, and these new menu buttons always re-
appeared in newly opened files. Until last week -- now, I
change the buttons and the changes disappear when I open a
new file. Why did the changes stick in the past, but not
now?
