When I click on the add device icon in control panel-scanners and cameras
nothing happens. The scanner has an unsigned driver that is supposed to work
with xp.

What model scanner?
Did you install the driver before you connected the scanner?
The scanner mfr may have a cleanup utility that needs to be run to fix
incorrect registry entries.
It may be necessary to uninstall the scanner driver and unplug the scanner.
Reboot, run the cleanup utility, reboot, reinstall the scanner driver, and
then plug in the scanner.
If the scanner is one of several HP scanners and software packages, there
are a few patches available on the web site.

UMax Mirage II. I have tried installing the software (Magic Scan 4.5) prior
to turning on the scanner & rebooting without effect. WinXP recognizes the
new hardware 7 times (7 separate Registry entries!) but says the .inf file
does not contain the required section

I read the post. It did not help. When I ran wiaacmgr the message came that
no scanner could be found, the same message I receive going through
Accessories-Camera & Scanner Wizard. wia is running, the canner is turned on
and appears in the SCSI section of BIOS after rebooting. I have removed all
but 1 reference to the Mirage II in the registry to no avail.

It is always best to use the installation program from the
manufacturer to install third party programs/hardware.

In the case of unsigned drivers... during installation a notice will
appear warning of such and you can choose to accept anyway and it
will install the program...The unsigned driver doesn't mean that it
is necesarily bad...only that it has not been fully checked
out/approved by Microsoft as a security issue.

If you do not have the installation program...you can usually download
one from the manufacturer's website. This also includes the drivers
themselves.

download the driver to the desktop and then shut down the
computer...hook up the device and boot back up...the wizard will then
auto detect and when asked...point it to the desktop driver file that
you downloaded
