All I wanted to do was install Paint. So I checked Paint. Now -- I can't
quite believe this - everything that *wasn't * checked is gone? How would I
know what was checked and what wasn't? Why would I care? What a stupid
program. All l wanted to do was install Paint. Now I don't have Internet
Explorer or Media Player.

Further, now Add/Remove doesn't work at all. "Setup cannot find the file
fxsapi.dll" etc etc

Hmmm...
As one cannot uninstall Internet Explorer (6) that easily (from Windows
XP)....
(Particularly the versions of Windows XP that would be floating around in
Georgia/USA...)

Something else has to be going on with your computer...

Anything in the event log?

The reply post here seems to fit your problem with Windows Component
installs:

Open Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, click "Show hidden files
and folders", and click to deselect "Hide protected operating system
files (Recommended)" and then look in the i386 folder again.

Try using System restore to go back to a date before the problem first
occurred.

Or try a repair install of XP.

Thanks. Tried several System Restores, but the Add/Remove reports the same
file(s) are still missing. Also, it turns out I can't install Outlook
Express either What's a "repair install of XP"? I have the XP disc from
Dell.

When you boot from the CD, there should be an option to do a repair
install. Basically XP is reinstalled without losing the references to
the currently installed programs.

To do a repair install:
