Add-Remove Programs for adware

I recently installed AdAware and I also was able to go to Add-Remove programs in my Control Panel for XP to remove unwanted programs. Now, after I click on the program I want to remove, I get the hourglass for about seven seconds and then the screen freezes and the program remains. For a few days, if I powered off and rebooted, the program would be gone but now they are still there. I installed Spybot yesterday but this freezing problem preceded that installation. Any help would be appreciated to unfreeze my Add-Remove option.
