add / remove program delay

It takes an unusually long time, several minutes, to populate my installed
programs in add/remove programs. New install of xp pro ver. 2002 sp2 six
months ago. I don't have any malware nor do I have a massive number of
programs installed.
Possibly relevant details:
Dell XPS Gen 2 Pentium 4 3.20GHz, 2.50 GB ram. SATA boot drive.

This isn't the first OS install on this machine where I've noticed this
issue. Just the first time I'm seeking info. My daughter's Dell 4600 (IDE
drive) loads the program list quickly.

Any insights would be appreciated.
