add/remove dialog takes too long to open.

I think the problem is it's reading the disk to figure out how much HD
space each app is using. Can I stop it from doing that? thanks

Not really unless you add the size of programs manually to the registry if
the "EstimatedSize" property is missing. See also

First step is to remove any apps you are not using. Then delete all
temp/tmp files, then defrag.
