There is an icon to start a program on my desktop, but it does not
appear with the list of programs shown when I click on Start, and then
All Programs. I want to remove the icon to free up desktop space.
However in order to be able to start this program I need to have it
included in my list of programs. How can I do this?

Click and drag it to the Start button, hover till the Start Menu opens,
continue hovering till you reach the spot where you want to drop it.

First, you shouldn't be installing programs on your desktop. Install
programs in a subfolder of your Program Files folder. You can create
Program Files folders in other disks/partitions if your boot partition
is getting too full. Drag downloads for installing programs to other
folders before running them too.

Once you install the program in some other folder create a shortcut from
the file's context menu (right click the icon for the context menu). You
can then drag the shortcut to the "Start" button and, once the menus are
displayed, to the "Start" button's various subfolders/submenus with the
mouse.

Elmo, it worked. Thank you. Not only was it added to my list of
programs, it was also added to the add/remove programs list in Control
Panel.

Robert,
I had no control over where this program was installed. Given a choice,
I do not install programs on my desktop. I always specify a drive and
folder where I want the program installed.

Glad it worked.. didn't know it would add it to Add/Remove Programs, but
that's great news too. Thanks for reporting back.
