I add a new video to Movie Maker and the video turns black

I added a new video to Movie Maker and the video turns black. I rendered it
just hoping the black screen would go away. But it didnt. So I looked at
other videos I imported to Movie Maker and now some are just black screens
with audio and other are just fine. I haven't changed anything in my process.
So what is going on?

Ni... Ive been doing this since November. And it worked fine then, the format
is an avi. Its just weird because in past videos I cropped and edited... Bits
and parts of the video show and the other half don't so I don't understand
what would be causing this.

there are over 800 types of avi file, so saying you have used avi is no use
to us.
Any change to your pc may mean that you can no longer edit a file which
isn't truly compatible with MM.
Find out what sort of avi it is - avicodec here - and then convert to wmv.

What I do in brief is to copy all my .vob files to a folder on my computer
hard drive. I then convert each .vob to a .wmv file using Windows Media
Encoder (using the All Files choice for importing). There are other
conversion tools, but that is what I use.

Hi
I read these articles thanks - now I know that because I'm trying to convert
from a Sony DVD, the video shows up as only 2 seconds on the timeline, using
Windows Media Converter - but does this mean I can't then edit it, or do I
use a different program to convert it....?
