add hardware wizard wont shut down

For reasons unknown when i go into add hardware wizard i
recieve a message saying cannot install more than 1 device
at a time. Presently i am not installing one, but xp
thinks it is . I wish to add more hardware in the future
but think this will stop me. any ideas anyone please!!!
