Add hardware pops up every time I log on

We have a windows 2000 PC that pops up an add new hardware
screen everytime someone logs onto the machine. We have
traced the faulty hardware back to an HP 5550 printer that
is connected to one of the USB ports. If we unplug the
printer and log on the problem goes away. The printer is
set up and works fine so I'm not sure why this error pops
up everytime.
