If from the control panel (classic view) I click on "Add Hardware" a dialogue
box comes up with: "You can only install one device at a time. Another device
installation is underway, when it is finished you can try this wizard again."
But there is no other device installation underway! Behaviour persists even
after reboot. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Robert,

It sounds like a prior install of something was interrupted and XP
thinks it has to complete the install.

Do a search for ERUNT and download it, install it and perform a registry
backup (it will make one after installation). This program has a very
simple to use restore in case you mess something up in the registry.

Open regedit and search (Ctrl-F) for FactoryPreInstallInProgress . It
probably has a DWORD value of 1, so delete the key. Continue searching
(F3 key proceeds to next instance) until the search is complete.

Look also in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\SETUP
to see if SystemSetupInProgress value is 1 (should be 0)
See if there is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Factory key
if so, delete it (Factory key only).

Reboot

Report back,

Thanks Terry,
As you predicted FactoryPreInstallationInProgress had a DWORD value of 1. I
deleted the key but that didn,t solve the problem. there was only one
instance in the registry.

SystemsetupInProgress was 0.

There is a file called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Factory, which
contains a file called State. Do you confirm that I should delete Factory?

Also, while I was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\SETUP, I noticed a key called
AuditInProgress with a DWORD value of 1. What about that? I think it probably
has something to do with a System Preparation tool window that came up when I
first booted the machine up after factory repair. I inadvertently clicked the
audit button and the window disappeared. Silly me! Should I change this value
to 0 or what?

Many thanks.
