I currently have an HP Laserjet 4MV connected to my XP Pro
computer at LPT2. However, each time I bring up my system
the computer attempts to reinstall the printer and then
errors out telling me the port can't be found. I have
added an LPT3 in the attempt alleviate the problem but I
continue to get the same error. The printer is
functioning fine, and except for being a major annoyance I
suppose there is nothing wrong with letting the system
search each time the computer comes up but I would like to
fix it. Any ideas?

This sounds similar to a problem I have with a LaserJet 1150

In January I replaced my old printer with an HP LaserJet 1150 and had trouble from the start. Whenever I tried to install the software it would get almost to the end and then detect the printer on a USB port (DOT4) when it is actually on LPT1, at this point the software installation would roll back

I eventually got the driver installed by breaking the installation rules and re-booting with the printer switched on before starting to install - it was supposed to be connected and switched on only after software installation. It still complained about the printer being on USB but the driver stayed and it works. However, after each re-boot I am told that the installation has failed and the USB icon is against the printer name, but the dialog only has the Finish button enabled, i.e. no option to search for a driver

I have just tried deleting the LPTENUM key as suggested by Cari but it made no difference.
