I have written a small text in Portuguese and I need to add accents to
certain letters etc....Can I do this with XP and only with wordpad ?

Open the Character Map.

Start | Run | Type: charmap | Click OK

Or click on the Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Character Map

Click the Help button and see:
Finding characters
Insert a special character into a document

You can copy and paste them into your Wordpad, NotePad or Word documents.
Also if you know the keystroke you can use that instead. Like Alt + 0241
for example. Alt + 0241 = Latin small letter N with the tilde = ñ

There's more than one way to do this, and some are much more convenient than
others.

I use a little freeware background program called AllChars. This lets me (in
all applications) type many common special characters (many of these are
used in other languages) by pressing the ctrl key followed by a two
character mnemonic combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and , For ü
it's u and "

Get "AllChars" a free keyboard-extender utility that enables accented
characters to be input from the keyboard.

I do not know why you need to add anything else tp XP. I am able to add the
accented French character (French Canadian) just by selecting the correct
language in the Language toolbar (Language settings in XP.)

I didn't suggest that you "needed" to add anything to Windows XP. Besides
your suggestion, you can also use Character Map, the US-International
Keyboard, or Alt-number combinations--all without using third-party
programs.

As I said, "There's more than one way to do this, and some are much more
convenient than others." I recommended what I thought was (by far) the most
convenient way. If you prefer a different way, feel free to use what you
prefer. However if you would try AllChars, you might also find that you
would also prefer it.
