Adaptec USBXCHANGE SCSI Adapter Quits

I have been using an Adaptec UsbXchange to run my UMax 1200S SCSI scanner
for over a year on a Windows XP Pro computer. This is a USB to SCSI
adapter. I went on vacation the last week in May and a short time I came
home the scanner no longer worked. I traced the problem to the adapter.

I went to the Adaptec web site and found specific directions for installing
the adapter and followed them. After the install I get the following
message: "Cannot Start this hardware: This device cannot start (Code 10)"

I then tried the adapter on my other WinXP computer and got the same
results. I then contacted Adaptec and they sent me a new USBXchange
adapter. I get the same (bad) results with the new one.

Since the adapter used to work under WinXP I can only assume that something
in Windows changed. Possibly one of the updates broke the drivers. I do
not remember what updates were installed around that time and even if I did,
what could be done about it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Walter
