Can machines in the same AD domain lie in different IP
subnets. If so how would you configure this with DNS etc.

Yes, you configure sites.

Take a look at www.microsoft.com/ad for general AD information.

You can configure your domain to span multiple sites and you can have you
site to span multiple domains. If your clients lie in different subnet in
different site but the same domain, name resolution will be through you
designated primary DNS servers no matter where they sitting. If the new site
is in a different location and requires a WAN connectivity then you should
consider put a local GC in that site for authentication. If its w2k3 envir.
then try enabling universal group caching in that site.
