I just installed the latest version of Ad Aware. Anyone do this and read
the license?

It says that we'll pay for the thing after the first year. Yup.

The Freeware version is Ad-Aware SE Personal. It can be found at
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

At the bottom of the page you will find this statement:

"Ad-Aware Personal edition is free for non-commercial use. For use in a
commercial/educational/governmental environment or to purchase registered
copies of Ad-Aware SE press the button below:"

It doesn't matter what they post on their web site: the rubber meets the
road when you install the program. You're just restating what's on their
web site; I'm talking about my actual experience. Which is the truth?

When you install the program -- the brand new free version 1.06 -- you
agree to the terms of the actual text, and that states that you'll pay
after the first year. As with most software, if you don't agree by
clicking the checkbox, the installation will abort.

Check it out! All you have to do is download the new version and install
it. I'm one of those strange people who actually reads this stuff, and
that's what it said.

Now, I suspect that Lavasoft put this into the software in error -- and
that this statement was taken from a regular paid version. However...

I just read the license.txt (in Ad-Aware program folder) and found this:

"All updates/upgrades for your purchased edition (regardless of build
or version) are free of charge for the year following your purchase of
the Software."

I understand that this means only the purchased version.

It says that after one year, you would have "to pay the yearly
maintenance and support fee in accordance with the then applicable
price list to continue receiving updates/upgrades for that following
year." Clicking doesn't obligate you to pay that fee, which will
probably be 0 again next year for home users.

It certainly looks like it was meant to apply to the purchased
version. The agreement grants a licence to "you, as purchaser of the
Software".

With freeware, the promise of free updates and upgrades, even in a
licence agreement, doesn't do much to bind them; the only
reasonable (IMO) remedy if they unexpectedly broke the promise would
be a refund of the purchase price.

Great. I'll do it!
Just: please tell me where I can find the consumer laws that apply to
this product in Sweden -- it is a Swedish company, and therefore
governed by Swedish statutes, no? An English translation would be great,
because my Swedish isn't so good.
