I have a non-brand name PC that I was tasked to repair. Found a lot of
spyware with spybot. Windows is highly outdated (patches, etc.) Has XP
Home, only SP1, Internet Explorer 6. I tried running the Update from within
IE but I keep getting the message, "your current security settings prohibit
running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display
correctly."

I've messed with the ActiveX settings till I'm just frustrated. Setting to
Enable, Prompt, etc. Still nothing. Any Ideas?

Hi B.I,m not sure where you are trying to update from but if you click
start, all programs. At the very top of the list you should see windows
update.Click on windows update. It will bring you to microsoft update center
and prompt you to check for updates.Click install recommended.Click on that
and it will tell you if you need updates. If the active x that is needed is
not there a yellow bar will pop down from the top bar and prompt you to
install.Hope this helps.TERRY.

Hi again B.You might try clicking on control panel.Click on
system.Hardware, device manager.A list of your programs for your pc.If you
right click on any of these you will see update driver,or if you don,t.Click
on properties. Then driver.Click update driver,Automatic. It will search the
net for a better driver. It might just be a case that your drivers are old.If
the pc detects a better driver it will load it.Hope this helps.TERRY.

look for any software that may be running that blocks active X from running,
ie spywareblaster and or a few others that block active x. look in processes
running, also what loads on startup.

So.In that case.Start,run,msconfig,ok.Go to start tab.Click.Dissable
all.Apply.Close.Restart pc.Close off dialog box at startup. All startup
programs are stopped. You will have to start your security manually. But all
the startup items are frozen.Once you have startup shut off.Do a
scan.Spyware,antivirus,etc. If the problem persists.Start up in safemode. Then
do a scan.If you have good security you should be able to get rid of
conflicting programs.Another thing you can try is.Disc defrag, disc
cleanup.Doesn,t hurt.Just puttin it out there.Good luck.PS.chkdsk for errors
2.
